Description :

Proposed wool store at Port Adelaide for the South Australian Farmers Cooperative Union Ltd.

By the late 1870s Port Adelaide had developed into the centre of wool buying and selling in South Australia, where the wool was classed and sold at Port Adelaide, ready for shipment from the adjacent docks.

The first woolstore to be erected on Santo Parade was Elder Smith & Co's in 1881. This was directly opposite the newly opened Port Adelaide Dock. Progressively more woolstores were built around the Santo Parade, St Vincent Street east area and by the early 20th century several other woolbrokers had opened stores including Bagot Shakes and Lewis, Dalgety and Luxmoore firms. Not all could be accommodated as close to the docks as Elders. The SA Farmers Union Cooperative woolstore was built at the corer of Aberdeen and Brock Streets, several blocks back from the wharves.

Today many of these original woolstores have been sold by their firms, and are no longer used for wool. With the redevelopment of Port Adelaide it is proposed that these large often derelict but ornate buildings and the precinct will be incorporated and adapted into a medium density residential development.
