Description :

The Town Hall and the interior of the Town Hall photographed about 1889.

This building was designed by Edmund Wright who had a preference for Italian architectural styles - therefore strong Florentine and Genoan design influences are visible in the design. Large pillars and arches form the impressive colonnade, and the carved heads of famous Italian artists such as Michelangelo and Donatello are alongside those representing Queen Victoria and Albert, the Prince Consort. The colonnade and above it, the Albert Tower are actually over the footpath itself. In the tower was a peal of bells, and the clock was not added until 1935, a gift of Councillor Bonython.

The interior shows the hall set out for a banquet. The large organ at the rear was installed in 1877.

Home of the oldest municipal body in Australia, the foundation stone of the Adelaide Town Hall was laid by Governor Daly on 23 April 1863. The Town Hall was officially opened in June 1866 with the eight bells in the Albert Tower celebrating the occasion. At the time the Adelaide Town Hall was the biggest municipal building in the southern Hemisphere.

The Town Hall proper is flanked by the Prince Alfred Hotel on the south which was completed in 1869, and on the north by the Eagle Chambers, a block of offices, built in 1876. These two buildings provided the Adelaide Council with revenue, but were eventually in the 1950s taken over for the Council's own use.
