The Reading Room Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide photographed in 1932. One of the architectural highlights of the Barr Smith Library building is the Reading Room with its gilded ceiling and Latin inscribed frieze. Initially the Reading Room was planned to hold 15,000 volumes and give reading space for 200 readers. A bookstack at ground level gave capacity for 135,000 volumes, and a proposed stack extension was projected to provide total accommodation of 500,000 volumes. Today the Barr Smith library has over 2 million volumes and services the information needs of thousands of students and academics. |
