The architectural drawing of the pediment for the principal entrance of the Exhibition Building by J.W. Barnes.A pediment is a low triangular gable above a cornice, and is used over doors, windows or porches. It would be used on classical style buildings.
This now demolished building on North Terrace was built to accommodate the Adelaide Exhibition in celebration of the colony's fiftieth birthday in 1887. A competition was held to select the design for the building. The winning design was that submitted by EA Scott who was articled to the firm of Bayer and Withall. However his design was considered too expensive and the committee chose Withall and Wells's design instead and appointed them as architects for the project. The builder was W Rogers and the cost of the works was 20,217 pounds.The building was finished in time for the June 1887 opening and the exhibition closed in June 1888.It remained in use for annual agricultural and horticultural shows until 1934 when these events moved to Wayville; the building was then occupied by the University of Adelaide and used partly for office space. Many thousands of students sat for examinations in its spacious hall. It was demolished in 1962 and its site is now occupied by the Napier building and an underground carpark. |
