West Terrace, East Side. Elephant Castle Hotel, 20th August 1971 West Terrace, East Side. Elephant and Castle Hotel, 20th August 1971 showing the drive-in bottle deparment, on West Terrace. The hotel was established in 1849, and rebuilt in 1879 to the design of architect Thomas English. It originally had a good well which supplied water to the adjoining hotel stockyards and was a watering point for the horses for the coaches on the Victor Harbor road. Among its other amenities the hotel possessed a weighbridge which was on the site of the bottle shop and among the goods weighed upon it was wood and charcoal from the forest workers at Yankalilla. Folding doors between the two front parlours could be opened to make one large room which was used as a coroner's court. However its trademark 'elephant and castle' window was lost at the hands of over-enthusiastic renovators. |
