Description :
Robert Clark Morgan, captain of the Duke of York - the ship which brought the first European settlers to South Australia - was a deeply religious man. Morgan hoped the new colony would be dedicated to Christian ideals. In his diary he records seeing a rainbow as the Duke of York approached land. He believed the rainbow to be a symbol, of God's promise to watch over the first settlers. Arriving on Kangaroo Island in 1836, Morgan conducted what is believed to be the first service of Christian worship on South Australian soil, at Nepean Bay.
