The first members of the Russian Orthodox Church in Adelaide met in a home in Byron Place in 1940. In the 1950s a competition was held to design a church building. The winner was an Adelaide man, KC Raisonas. The Russian architect VS Pozhidajev adapted the design, using the 13th century church of Vladimir-Novgorod Apok as the prototype. Later he also designed the altar screen. The engineer for the building was NM Kovanko. Footings were poured in 1961, but it was almost eight years before the church was completed. Much of the work was done by volunteers, including members of other churches. The first services were held in the church in 1970. The church layout, like most Russian Orthodox churches, is based on the Greek cross, with the altar at the eastern end. MK Rantman of Brisbane was the artist of the interior paintings depicting Russian saints. |
