Description :
Mark Twain arrived in Sydney in September 1895 with his wife and daughter. The family spent nearly four months touring Australia and New Zealand. Twain spent four days in Adelaide, reading from his works at the Theatre Royal. The people of Adelaide were highly entertained by his humorous stories and readings. During his brief visit he was amazed by the number of religious groups represented in South Australia. Built on the colony's original ethos of religious freedom, by the end of the 19th century the 'movement of the mind' saw much experimentation in spirituality and a turning to alternative religions and variations of Christianity.
