The first Mormon in South Australia was William Barratt, who arrived with his family from Staffordshire in 1840 at the age of 17. A small community of Latter-Day Saints formed in Adelaide, and in 1922 completed the building of a chapel in Wright Street. In 1977 a larger church complex was built at Modbury. This, in turn, was superseded by a complex at Marden, opened in 2000. Designed in the United States, the award-winning building was built by Baulderstone Hornibrook at a cost of $10 million. The building is able to accommodate 10,000 worshippers. |
