Description :

In 1871 Bishop John Coleridge Patteson was killed by natives at Santa Cruz when he was wrongly assumed to be a slave trader. He had begun his missionary work in 1855 based out of New Zealand. Patteson was a fine linguist, learning 23 of the Melanesian languages during his years in the islands. In 1867 he established headquarters on Norfolk Island as a base for the work which included 2,800 Pacific Islands. The islands were also the haunt of labour recruiters known as 'blackbirders', some of whom used Patteson's name to entice natives onto their ships. The South Australian Anglican Church had strong ties with the Melanesian Mission, so that in 1894 when Henrietta Kennion, the wife of the Bishop of Adelaide, was returning to England with her husband, the 'church women of South Australia' included this beautiful, but anonymous, artwork in the volume of illuminated addresses they presented to her.
