In 1877 the Lutheran church sent two pastors to establish a mission to the Aborigines on the Finke River in the centre of the Australian continent. After 14 years of struggling with heat, drought and sickness, the mission was temporarily abandoned in 1891. In 1894 Hermannsburg (as the mission was re-named) was revived with the arrival of an energetic young pastor, Carl Strehlow, his wife and other missionaries. Strehlow came to be greatly respected by the Arrernte people, who named him 'Ingkata' ('chief'). He learned the Western Arrernte language, recorded the customs of the people and translated the New Testament first into Diyari, and later into Arrernte. The 1200 square miles of Mission land were worked as a cattle station and date plantation to provide a small income. Strehlow died at Horseshoe Bend in 1922, after which the mission was run by the teacher, Adolph Heinrich, until Pastor F.W. Albrecht arrived in 1926. In 1982 control of the mission lands was returned to the traditional owners under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act. |
