Description :

Laurence Bonaventure Shiel became Roman Catholic Bishop of Adelaide in 1866. When Bishop Shiel died in March 1872, he left major divisions within the local Catholic Church, not least through his excommunication of Mary MacKillop a few months earlier for allegedly resisting his attempt to take charge of her order and change the sisters' rule of life. The debacle was largely caused by the interference of a Franciscan friar named Charles Horan. Under the pretext of preaching a funeral sermon for the Bishop, Horan launched a vicious attack on those who had disagreed with Shiel and himself, and castigating the Sisters for their 'ignorance and fanaticism'. There had been a furious debate in the press over MacKillop's excommunication and Horan referred to the Catholic newspaper, the Irish harp (who had supported her) as a 'virulent cancer on the bosom of Catholicism in South Australia'. The newspaper retaliated by publishing Horan's funeral oration together with evidence refuting each of his statements.
