The Rev. Joseph Kirby was a militant social reformer, working tirelessly, amongst other things, for 'temperance' - the movement encouraging individuals to abstain from drinking alcohol. When he retired from Port Adelaide Congregational Church, Kirby became the leader of the campaign which successfully lobbied South Australian Parliament for hotel bars to close at six o'clock. This was passed as law in 1915, and remained in place until 1967. |
