Description :
The Anglican Orphan Home was founded in 1860, largely through the efforts of Julia Farr. Girls from poor backgrounds received training that would eventually make them employable as domestic servants. The home began in a private house in Stepney, and in 1861 moved to the former British and German Hospital in Carrington Street. At the age of 16 work was found for the girls in 'respectable' households. In 1908 the home moved to Mitcham where it was re-named 'Farr House'. It closed in 1978. The Orphan Home was probably the first specifically Anglican welfare agency in Australia, and as a private charitable organisation relied on donations and fund-raising to survive. Individual churches including St. Paul's in Pulteney Street saw support of charities such as this as part and parcel of their religious beliefs.
