Description :
The Prisoners' Aid Society was founded in Adelaide in 1886 as a Christian-based group which aimed to offer religious encouragement to prisoners at Yatala Labour Prison, as well as to assist in their rehabilitation. The idea had come about through the Rev. A.G. Rawstorne and his work with the short-lived Strangers' Friend Society. In late 1889 a series of articles in the Register newspaper drew attention to the work of the organisation and drew wider support to their cause. Today, as OARS (Offenders Aid and Rehabilitation Services of S.A.), the organisation continues to provide much support to offenders and their families, through government subsidies, as well as the ongoing support of many loyal volunteers.
