Description :

View of the cupola and coat of arms above the Rundle Mall entrance to the Adelaide Arcade.

Although Federation did not occur until 1901, at the time Adelaide Arcade was built (in 1885) several competitions had already been held to choose a coat of arms for the Commonwealth of Australia. The coat of arms that adorns Adelaide Arcade may have been the winner of one of these competitions, but it is not the design that eventually became our official coat of arms. The major difference from the official coat of arms is that the emu and kangaroo are on opposite sides of the shield.
