Description :

While his horses and men rested and recuperated on the banks of Cooper Creek, Sturt considered his options; continue north as originally planned or to explore eastwards along the creek. He had experienced the vagaries and disillusionment of Australian rivers in his explorations in 1828-29 of the rivers of western New South Wales, where they disappeared into marshes or altogether or ran salt from brine springs in their bed, as did the Darling River. He brought all of this experience to bear on his decision whether or not to explore the creek to the east.

Sturt was one of Australia's most experienced explorers at this time, having explored the western rivers of New South Wales in 1828-29, and discovered the Darling River. He then explored the Murrumbidgee/Murray River system to its mouth in South Australia, and correctly deduced that the Darling River flowed into the Murray at the large junction he came across. After overlanding stock to Adelaide he later moved there from New South Wales and in 1839 led an expedition with Governor Gawler to Mount Bryan. His expedition of 1844-46 was to be his last expedition in Australia.
