Description :

The work of the MacKay expedition is described by Herbert Basedow. He describes the geology of The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) and of the adjacent country. They climbed a prominent hill called by local Aboriginal people Eringana. Basedow was able to confirm that this was Ernest Giles' Mount Unapproachable and Tietkens' Mount Harris, illustrating the difficulties experienced by earlier explorers in accurately locating landmarks. Today the hill is officially known as Mount Unapproachable at 24 degrees 20 minutes south, 130 degrees 5 minutes east.

Ernest Giles led five expeditions through central Australia between 1872 and 1876. He was the first white man to see Mount Olga (Kata Tjuta) on 13 October 1872. He returned to the prominent landmark again the following year. William Tietkens was with him on two expeditions but also led his own expeditions, including one in 1889, which was notable for taking the first photographs of Ayers Rock (Uluru) and Mount Olga (Kata Tjuta) as well as previously unknown species of plants.
