Description :

Corroberribera waterhole was drawn by Benjamin Herschel Babbage 18 May 1858. It is one of two waterholes some 8 miles apart known as Smith's waterholes. The larger of the two is Wirrawirralu, or as Babbage recorded it Wirrawirralie. Babbage was at this latter waterhole in June 1858. These waterholes are about 25 miles from Lake Campbell. At the time Babbage was there in May 1858 it was one of the few reliable water supplies in the area. He also wrote 'the right bank is steep, and shows some horizontal beds, or rather single layers, of a clay-slate; the left bank, on the contrary, is sloping and is covered with a bright green carpet of a kind of trefoil, having however four leaves, and a small yellow blossom ... the water was beautifully clear, and free from weeds.'

Benjamin Babbage was the leader of a South Australian government expedition sent out to explore the northern regions of the colony, and find a route through the apparent barrier of salt lakes that blocked forward progress. Equipped by the government for 18 months he was eventually recalled for being too slow. He was replaced by Peter Egerton Warburton, just as he discovered a way through the salt lakes.
