Description :

In November 1837, less than a year after the settlement of South Australia, T Bewes Strangways and Young Bingham Hutchinson set out from Adelaide to explore the Murray River, intending to borrow a whaleboat and crew from the whaling station at Encounter Bay. They wanted to test the navigability of the Murray Mouth and explore up river. This portion of the young colony was still little known. The men would also search for another outlet from Lake Alexandrina for the river. The southern ranges of the Fleurieu Peninsula were extremely precipitous and their passage difficult.

The question of an alternative outlet for the River Murray and Lake Alexandrina had previously been examined in 1831 by Captain Collet Barker. He had not found one, and had been killed after swimming alone across the Murray Mouth. Strangways and Hutchinson found the Murray Mouth navigable, but it was not always so, as they discovered later.
