Oakbank races

First held in 1876, the races at the Oakbank Racing Club in the Adelaide Hills are held on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. One of the most exciting races of the carnival is the Great Eastern Steeple. Drawing a crowd of approximately 70,000 on Easter Monday, the carnival is the largest picnic race meet in the southern hemisphere. Even those with no particular interest in racing are drawn to Oakbank for the lush green surroundings, the food and drink and the rides and stalls set up in the centre of the track.
