When Winnecke had failed to find water at the native well he sent the camels with three men further up the creek to see if some could be found, while he remained to mind the camp. They were successful and were able to dig one well out and obtained about 40 gallons for each of the camels. Winnecke recorded blazing a tree here with C.W. 27, i.e his 27th camp. He continued exploring the Hay River, and named a prominent hill after a relative: Mount Winnecke stands at 23 degrees 11'S 136 degrees 59'E. He camped in the wide sandy centre of the creek, the only area free from burs. He left the camels to rest while he examined the country either side of the creek. Overnight dingoes stole one of Winnecke's boots; he had no spares. This is a repetition of what had happened on an earlier expedition when both boots were taken. The Hay River gum flats were well grassed. Winnecke followed the Hay River south to where it disappeared into the desert. After investigating the potential of the area he completed his explorations by travelling north-east to the headwaters of the Field River, and finished at Sandringham Station 12 October. He returned to Adelaide via the Strzlecki Track and the train from Beltana. In 1894 he would be appointed to lead the Horn Scientific Exploring Expedition. |
