Description :

By 1839 the concept of collective bargaining was being employed by several trades in South Australia. Mechanics, tailors and carpenters had all employed collective bargaining to improve wages and conditions. In April 1839 the South Australian Builders' Trades' Union Society advertised a meeting to discuss the regulation of prices and wages. In November of that year more than a hundred members farewelled the secretary, Mr Hanson.

In a later item published in the Southern Australian on 1 May 1839, South Australian Builders' Trades Union Society Secretary, Theodoric Hanson, states the purpose of the meeting is,
'to consider the propriety of establishing a price book for the better regulation of the price of labour, material, &c., to receive opinions, and to pass resolutions ... In making this call upon the builders of Adelaide, the committee and members of the above society are actuated solely by the firm conviction of the strong necessity that a union of interests should exist between all persons engaged in the operation of building; we therefore earnestly invite the builders of Adelaide, to co-operate with us in forming the bonds of union, our object to be the amelioration of the evils attendant on our respective occupations, the advancement of the rights and privileges of labour, and a fair remunerating profit on material, and the cultivation of brotherly affection, and a mutual regard for each others welfare'.
