Plate 31 of George French Angas' South Australia Illustrated: The Kapunda Copper Mine. Part of the text accompanying the illustration reads 'The annexed plate represents the Kapunda Copper Mine, as it appeared in March 1845; since that period the works have been greatly extended. Operations have been going on at this mine for a little more than two years'.

Artist George French Angas - son of George Fife Angas, one of the founders of the South Australian Company - travelled throughout the fledgling colony, painting some of the earliest European views of South Australia.

At the time of this painting the Kapunda Mine was in its infancy - the mine would eventually have a peak output of 4103 tons of copper or in 1857. Between 1844 and 1912 64,000 tons of ore was mined at Kapunda, yielding 12,800 tons of copper.
