Description :

Charles Sturt continues his letter to John Morphett. The land is dipping down to the interior, and he believes the inland sea will soon be revealed. He also outlines to his friend his plan for forward advance on his expedition by taking a small party ahead while the main party maintains a base depot. He is determined to uncover the nature of the interior of Australia. As he completes his letter he adds in a post script that his second-in-command James Poole has returned.

Sturt has also questioned the Aboriginal people about the land ahead: they inform him that there is neither grass nor water, or even wood for fires, that the land is hot and barren. Sturt doubts them and thinks it unlikely they have even been beyond the hills ahead. Their decription of the land ahead is contrary to that of Poole, who has reported seeing a sea extending across the horizon, and more ranges of hills.
