There is no agreed definition of drought, although in South Australia it generally means a period of severely reduced or non existent rainfall causing significant reduction of harvests and livestock losses. Drought can be localised or more widespread. Farmers and graziers hand feed their stock as long as possible to maintain a breeding herd, or if the option is available, send their best animals to agist in non-drought affected regions. In extremity some pastoralists have sent out part of their herds to graze the 'long paddock'--the roadside verges of country highways.
