Description :

G. Lonzar & P. Macrow banding a Cape Barren goose (Cereopsis novaehollandiae) at the Flinders Chase National Park.

The Cape Barren goose, occurs in coastal southern Australia and offshore islands. Occurs in pairs or small flocks and feeds on grasses and herbage of various kinds. Sometimes known as the Pig goose due to the grunting sound it emits.

In the 1950s its numbers were so low that it was feared it would become extinct. Various initiatives have since been taken which have increased the goose population to a level no longer considered to be in danger. However, they remain one of the rarest of the world's geese. - Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service
