Description :

Close view of a Fairy Penguin on the west coast of South Australia. Also known as the Little Penguin it is the only penguin that breeds in Australia.

Fairy penguins are found along Australia's southern coastline, Tasmania and off shore islands. They return at night to the burrows they have dug out among rocks or under large tussocks of grass. They are adept swimmers and divers averaging depths of between 10-30 metres.

Where they make their burrows close to human habitation, they are vulnerable to attack by uncontrolled dogs and feral cats. Like all seabirds they are also vulnerable to oil spills, and fishermen's nets and abandoned fishing lines.
