Several seal carcasses scattered on a sandy beach near granite rocks on Pearson Island, off the west coast of South Australia. The carcasses appear dessicated, so it is likely that the seals died of injuries or natural causes, having hauled out on to the island and died. The islands of South Australia, including the west coast and Kangaroo Island, are favoured breeding sites of seals and sea lions. The animals were hunted for their skins and oil in the 19th century, and some colonies were almost exterminated. |
