David Lindsay summarises the miles the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition had covered, the severity of the prolonged drought and the difficulties it had placed on finding water. He also speaks of his disappointment in the lack of support he received from some of the men of the expedition. He believed that had he been allowed to recruit replacements for these, he would have be able to complete the expedition's program. He also recorded his appreciation of the good work and loyalty of Lawrence Wells, the expedition's surveyor, who assumed command of the expedition after Lindsay was recalled by the expedition's management in Adelaide. The Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition was financed by Sir Thomas Elder and was managed by the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch). The South Australian Branch of the Society had been established in 1885 and there was input from the other branches of the Society in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. The Elder Expedition was the first major undertaking by the South Australian Branch in exploring the 'blanks' on the Australian map . These 'blanks' were the areas which lay between the routes of previous expeditions, for instance Block A was between the routes of William Christie Gosse in 1873 and Ernest Giles in 1875, and Block B was between the routes of John Forrest in 1874 and Ernest Giles in 1876. It was hoped that good pastoral lands, or mineral deposits would be found. |
