On page 2 of his letter to the colonists who had sponsored his expedition, Horrocks explained how he set out from their depot accompanied by ST Gill and Bernard Kilroy. They had provisions for three weeks and 10 gallons of water, which were carried on the camel. They would attempt to reach some high land previously noted by the explorers Edward Eyre and John Darke. The country was largely red sand-hills, with some stony ground, a little oaten grass and the salsolaceous plants typical of arid lands.

Salsolaceous plants was a term used by 19th century Australian explorers, including Charles Sturt, to describe a range of plants that were found in inland Australia. They are described as plants found on the sea coasts and the salt impregnated soils of warm and temperate regions.
