Shipping at Port Adelaide, looking East, probably from the Government Dockyard, with Prince's Wharf and Prince's stores on the right. The vessel in the foreground with the pennant is either the Beatrice or the Flinders. The Flinders was acquired by the Marine Board in 1865 amid some controversy because of her cost. Poorly maintained she sank at her moorings in 1873. This makes it more likely that the photograph is of the Beatrice which had a much longer service for the South Australian government. In 1862 Beatrice was purchased jointly by the Admiralty and the South Australian government for survey work along its coasts. Some of this time was spent on the Northern Territory coast after it was annexed by South Australia in 1863. By 1880 Beatrice was owned solely by South Australia and spent some years as a marker for the moorings for the large mail ships off Glenelg and Semaphore. |
