The Verge

A psychedelic, beat group, The Verge emerged on to the Adelaide scene in 1981. Featuring Mark Storm (guitar, vocals), Rohan Belton (Bass, vocals), Andrew Piper (lead guitar). Belinda MacQueen (organ, vocals) Scott Morse (drums) they released two songs on An oasis in a desert of noise; Outside Eden written by Storm and Here With No Fear by Belton. John Gilbert joined on drums in early 1985 but the paisley patterned summer was ending and they played their last gig in March 1985 at the Tivoli Hotel. Belton went on to play with the Garden Path and The Dust Collection, MacQueen became vocalist with The Ninth Wave, Piper guitarist with the blues band Jam In A Flat, The Millards, Keswick City Ramblers, Driver and Green Circles and Gilbert drummer with The Paradise Interchange, The El Dorados, Orson and Green Circles.

Tragically the group recorded little material outside of the Oasis album, however, the State Library holds a good collection of bootlegs, including Live at the Electric Torture Room (1985) and Live at the Tivoli Hotel (1985). The group reformed for a show at the Grace Emily Hotel in 2006 which was recorded and released, along with original 1980's recordings, on CD in 2007 by Smashed Records under the title Good Love.

Ded Nats

Had a song How to keep your husband happy included on the Greasy Pop compilation album An oasis in a desert of noise released in 1985.

Line-up includes four vocalists: Judi, Sue, Robina and Flee backed by the Floatie Brothers, Travis, Syd and Max.

Dust Collection

Described by Vic Conrad in Underground in the city of churches (p 39) as a 'party band, we play our favourite songs from the sixties'. The Dust collection were active in Adelaide from 1984 to 1987 and put out one single with GPR, 10 till 13 o'clock b/w with Green (when she says) and The Light Members of the Dust Collection were Scott Allen (guitar), Rohan Belton (bass, vocals), Gerry Barrett (guitar), Vic Conrad (aka Travis Underdog and Vic Flierl) (vocals, guitar, keyboard), and Andrew Geue (drums) Mark Emmett (guitar), Paul Jolly (bass). Conrad and Belton were concurrently in The Garden Path.

They were selected in 1985 to be included in the Sydney station's 2JJJFM (now known as ABC's JJJ) Cooking with George second edition compilation album with the song So sad today.

After the Dust Collection various band members went on to form and play in other bands. Rohan Belton, who had previously been in The Verge, went on to play in the Handmedowns, and is currently active in Queensland in a band called Trailer Park. Vic Conrad continued with the Garden Path and now records and performs with Vic Conrad and the First Third. Barrett who had been with Del Web Explosion, was also in the original lineup of the Exploding White Mice.

Primitive Painters

Formed in late 1982 by Rodney Tyler, David Norris and Greg Vincent, their original music was influenced largely by British 1960s groups such as The Who and The Kinks.

They produced one album The Sea of Art which released on cassette, vinyl and CD by the Greasy Record Company in 1990. They also released a single in 1990 The Bismark Girls b/wThe Sea of Art under the Greasy Record label.

A Primitive Painters song Undertow appears on the Greasy Pop compilation album An oasis in a desert of noise released in 1985.

The line up for the Primitive Painters includes: Greg Bosano (drums), Colin Finlay (guitar, voice 1985-1987), Peter Long (Guitar voice 1987), David Norris (drums 1983-1985, 1990), Andy Przygonski (Drums 1990), Mark Shepherd (drums 1984-1986), Andrew Spy (drums 1985-1987), Rodney Tyler (Guitar, voice), Greg Vincent (bass, voice 1983-1985, 1987)

The Garden Path

Described by Spencer as 'atmospheric, moody indie pop'.

The Garden Path started when Vic Flierl from the defunct Fools Apart joined with Rohan Belton from The Verge and Graeme Burdett, guitarist from the Screaming Believers. The band came to the public's attention in Adelaide through winning a place with their song Night and Day on the Brewing mini album, a competition organised by radio station SAFM during 1985 to highlight local talent.

They were selected in 1985 to be included in the Sydney station's 2JJJFM (now known as ABC's JJJ) Cooking with George, second edition compilation album with two songs What do you want to hear and Times [out of mind].

The Garden Path was active between 1984-1991. The original line up consisted of Vic Conrad (Flierl) guitar and vocals, Colin Gellard on bass, drummer Terry Aldridge, Rohan Belton, keyboards and Graham Burdett on lead guitar. As some of these players left the band they were replaced with David Lokan lead guitar, Craig Rodda drums and Charles Derek, keyboards.

The line up included Mick Brown (1984-1985), Ian List (1985-1986), Jim Selene (1984-1985), Greg Swanborough, Doug Thomas, James Tizard (1985-1986), Chris Willard (1986), Sheree Goldsworthy (1991) and Paul Sharman (1991).

She's melting - single in 1983
Six sharp cuts - mini-album in 1984
Bloody mess - single in 1985
River of love - single in 1986
Colour in a black forest - album in 1986

Greg and Ian tried to make a name for the Spikes in London in 1986. However before they left The Spikes released Colour in a black forest. David Sly (The Advertiser April 1986, p24) describes this album as 'The 10 songs show a greater melodic strength and harnessing of the band's trademark of surging guitars', and in August 1986 reviewed the album in The Advertiser concluding the review with 'It's a potent, throbbing album full of guitar, a big beat and irresistible tunes from one of Adelaide's finest rock 'n' roll outfits'.

The Mad Turks From Istanbul

Described by Greasy Pop boss Doug Thomas as 'Eddie Cochran on dangerous chemicals' .

First coming to the broader public's attention by winning a place on the Brewing mini album, organised by SA-FM in 1985 to highlight local talent with Not here (that's where I wanna be), the band had formed in 1984.

In 1987, the Mad Turks first album release Caf © Istanbul, was the catalyst for a long term deal between Doug Thomas's Greasy Pop Records, which then became the Greasy Pop Record Company, and Festival Records to release three albums from the Mad Turks and three more from GPR's Exploding White Mice, enabling 'easier' national distribution.

The original line up was Chuck Skatt (Charles Jenkins), Hank M Turk (Matthias Eckhardt) Martyn La Merde (Martyn Christopher) and Dom Benedictine III (Domenic Larizza). Hank M Turk left the band in 1989 with Dom Benedictine moving to guitar and Steve Caon joining on drums.

In 1989 the band decided to relocate to Melbourne to try their luck and shortened their name to The Turks. Unfortunately the band only lasted a year and by 1992 the band had evolved into The Icecream Hands who continue to record and perform. Jenkins has also released a number of solo albums.

The Mice's line up over the years included Giles Barrow, Andrew Bunney, Gerry Barrett, David Bunney, Paul Gilchrist, Jack Jacomas, Andy McQueen, David Mason, Craig Rodda and Jeff Stephens.
