NKVD says the Philisteins 'blend psych, punk and grunge in a pretty unique way'. Spencer describes their sound as '60s garage rock'.

The original line up consisted of Adyn Hibberd (guitar, vocals harmonica), Guy Lucas (guitar, vocals, organ), Scott Harrison (bass) and Charlie Shackloth (drums) soon replaced by Mark Coombes.

The Philisteins began in 1985 in Hobart for a one off party gig under the name The Cheesemongers. By 1986 the band had a new name the Philisteins and according to McFarlane, liked what they heard on the Greasy Pop label and relocated to Adelaide in 1987. They had three releases on Greasy Pop including their debut eight track mini album Bloody Convicts in 1988, contributed one track - Early morning memory, to GPR's compilation album Oasis 2 in 1989 and in that year recorded their second mini album Some kind of philisteins. In Adelaide, Harrison and Coombes left the band and were replaced by Ian Wettenhall and Nick Bruer. Later Nick Bruer was replaced by Stewart Talbert.

In 1989 the Phillisteins decided to move back to Hobart and from there to Sydney and in 1990 to Melbourne.

In 1992, Lucas, Wettenhall and Tabert, quit The Philisteins to form The Freeloaders with Sean Greenway and Wettenhall later joined the Lords of Gravity.
