Gun control

Described by Spencer as 'Tough hard punk band'. In their 3 year existence (1981-1984) they produced one release which was the self titled album Gun Control in 1982.

Fly the Flag Mr Callum was a song theirs which made it onto the Greasy Pop compilation album A Greasy Selection released in 1985.

The line up included Kelly Hewson on guitar, Paul Loughhead (drums), Phil Perm (bass) and Rip Savage (voice).

The Dagoes

Described as an 'intense rock band' (Spencer, p9) they were active from 1978 to 1984 and was the catalyst in 1979 for Doug Thomas to create Greasy Pop Records.

Their 1980 single release We sell soul was their first recording.

Over the band's history there were a few membership shuffles which saw people such as Ian List join the band. However the members considered core to the group include Doug Thomas (guitars), Richard Cant (aka Tony Rome) (vocals), Tony Rome (aka Neil Perryman) (guitars) and Johnny Tomato (aka Bodhan [Kostyn]) (keyboards).

The Assassins

The Assassins emerged from the break up of the Dagoes, and consisted of Doug Thomas and Ian List. Together they recorded a single Assassination in 1982 which was released in 1983. Doug Thomas, founder and owner of GPR and Ian List went on to perform in bands such as the The Spikes and The UVs

Their discography includes: A single Assassination (the b side being Suicide) released on Greasy Pop in 1983; their version of the Stooges song 1969 on the Satellite Records 1987 compilation Raw Cuts volume 4, In 1990 they released a shared 12" with the UV's titled Kill the Prime Minister.

Fools Apart

Described by Spencer as 'aggressive guitar pop, laced with powerful harmonies', active in Adelaide between 1981-1984.

Vic Flierl from this band went on to form The Garden Path with Screaming Believers guitarist Graeme Burdett and also played with The Dust Collection. He now records and performs with Vic Conrad and the First Third.

Screaming Believers

Greasy Pop boss Doug Thomas referred to The Screaming Believers as 'the best band this town has ever seen' (Kelton, p. 63)

Formed in 1981 and ended in 1992. McFarlane describes their songs as 'brimming with refined songs and highly proficient, melodic guitar thrash'.

The line up included Ken Sykes (guitar, vocals), Graeme Burdett (guitar) (1982-1985), replaced by John Cavuoto, formerly of The Innocents, (1985-1992), Rees Hughes (bass) (1982-1985) replaced by Cloudy Kattern (1985-1988), Craig Rodda (drums), Paul Hughes (vocals, saxophone) and Jodie Peterson (bass) (1988-1991) .

Their first album with Greasy Pop was Communist mutants from space which won praise for the Screaming Believers. A distribution deal with Big Time Records resulted in 50,000 copies being pressed for sale in the USA. Their second Greasy Pop album, Refugees from the Love Generation in 1987 gained the band European attention and a recording contract was offered in 1989 by Megadisc for 3 albums. McFarlane suggests it is 'a great shame that they failed to attract a wider audience'.

Cavuoto went on to play with The Ninth Wave and Vegans in Leather, Burdett to the Garden Path and Rodda played with the Ists, Double Wammy and Vic Conrad and the First Third amongst others.

The band has reformed for a number of shows since their 'official' break up.

July 14th

An Adelaide band around from 1984-1986.

The band was put together by Terry Bradford,and the core members were Terry, Rod Ling and Robyn Habel with Tom Cowsill, Andrew Mills, Roy Ezinger and Brett Spilsbury joining at different stages.

The name July 14 is made up from the birth date of three of the band members. The group's first single Me and My Gun did very well nationally and internationally. The release of the album Australian Bite was greatly anticipated and in SA great it's our music 1956-1986, (p 234) the album is described as '...an exciting performance record...highlighted the virtuoso talent of guitarist Rod Ling in the rich, crafted songs from the pen of Terry Bradford'.

The group was commissioned to provide the tracks for two documentaries, the first for the ABC titled Searching for Women's History a 3 part documentary which was broadcast on national television. The second project was a US documentary on the Zanoni shipwreck off of Port Lincoln.

The Acid Drops

The Acid Drops were a South Australian band around between 1982-1985. Their style has been described as '60s garage pop'. Their discography consists of a 1984 single Surfin prostitute beat with the b side consisting of Rattle my Zulu and Out of sight out of mind. They also appear on the 1985 Greasy Pop compilation album A Greasy Selection with It's a happening.

The Purple Gang

Formed in 1984. The line up included Martin Bland, Jim Selene from Bloodloss and the Primevils, and also included Mick Brown, Andrew Galpin, Gerald MacIntyre and Christine Williamson.

The Purple Gang were formed purely to release this EP that included four tracks: Off the bone, Only came to dance, No tranquilisers and Rocks in my mouth. R

The Spikes

An Adelaide band together between 1983-1986, with a revival between 1990 and 1991. Were once known as the Falling Spikes.

The line up included Mick Brown (1984-1985), Ian List (1985-1986), Jim Selene (1984-1985), Greg Swanborough, Doug Thomas, James Tizard (1985-1986), Chris Willard (1986), Sheree Goldsworthy (1991) and Paul Sharman (1991).

Greg and Ian tried to make a name for the Spikes in London in 1986. However before they left The Spikes released Colour in a black forest. David Sly (The Advertiser April 1986, p24) describes this album as 'The 10 songs show a greater melodic strength and harnessing of the band's trademark of surging guitars', and in August 1986 reviewed the album in The Advertiser concluding the review with 'It's a potent, throbbing album full of guitar, a big beat and irresistible tunes from one of Adelaide's finest rock 'n' roll outfits'.
