Description :

The inaugural Adelaide Festival of Arts was staged over two weeks from 12 to 26 March 1960. The Festival is a biennial event, now held over three weeks during March in 'even' years. It is considered to be one of the most outstanding arts festivals in the world. Festival performances and exhibitions feature local, national and international artists presenting a wide variety of art forms including music, opera, dance, theatre, literature, film and visual arts.

Highlights from Adelaide Festivals of Arts include numerous world premier works, often with international collaborations, and outstanding presentations created by South Australians, such as Stan Ostoja-Kotkowski'sStage and sound , featuring a combination of electronic images, music and dance (1960) and Sir Robert Helpmann's ballet Don Quixote , starring Rudolf Nureyev (1970).

From 1960 Adelaide Writers' Week has focussed on writers, readers and publishers, and from 1992 WOMADelaide has celebrated world music, arts and dance; both these events were first produced with the Adelaide Festival of Arts, and continue to flourish. Held at the same time as the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe provides alternative and complementary programs of events featuring independent artists.

The State Library of South Australia holds materials including posters, programs and memorabilia from the first to the current Adelaide Festival of Arts.
