Description :

South of Wilpena Pound, in the Flinders Ranges.

Wilpena Pound is a remnant valley floor from an ancient range of mountains that have been eroded away over millions of years. The higher walls of the pound are quartzite, a rock which is very resistant to weathering. The pound, including the ranges, is approximately 17 km long by 8 km wide and covers an area of some 100 square km. The level floor of the Pound is approximately 8 kilometres long and 4 km wide.
