A Dutch cargo ship, the SS Walcheren waiting at the new jetty at Cape Thevenard on the west coast of South Australia. The town and port are now known as Thevenard. Walcheren was the first ship to use the new facilities at Thevenard which was built as the new deep sea port for the far west coast. The railways on Eyre Peninsula would bring the cargo to the port. Construction on the harbour facilities began in 1914 and the jetty was finally completed in 1920 after some difficulties. It was the first concrete jetty in South Australia: 341 metres long, with a head 158 metres long and 11.3 metres wide. Loading was initially still done the old way, loading via ketches. In 1951 an upgrade to the jetty was made when Waratah Gypsum wanted to use the facilities for exporting gypsum; a double jetty was briefly considered, but the idea was rejected. Silos and conveyor belts were completed in June 1961 for bulk handling- the 2000 foot conveyor belt could be used to load gypsum or wheat and later for salt. The jetty was extended in 1965 and strengthened in 1969. The channel has been dredged to 8.2 metres.The bulk handling facilities are now managed by ABB Grain Ltd, and the port managed by Flinders Ports. Major exports are gypsum and grain, with fertiliser the main import. |
