The article refers to the imminent cutbacks at the shipbuilding yard of Poole and Steel at Osborne. Originally contracted to build four ships for the Commonwealth government, this had been cut to three ships, with the possible loss of 100 jobs. The article reports that two ships were completed and the third and last is well under way and expected to be finished shortly. Provided the state government can provide work, some 200 men could be kept in work building dredgers and a floating crane.

The details of the original contract and its funding are laid out, with a final disclaimer of any financial responsibilty by the state government, other than its initial advance of 60,000 pounds.
