Description :

An advertisement for the Birkenhead Slip, owned by Thomas Cruickshank. In addition to his slipway and ship repair business, Cruickshank operated steam driven saw mills. Sited on the bend of the Port River adjacent to the Birkenhead Bridge and near where the tug boats are presently moored, Cruickshank's yard covered about one acre and he employed 10 sometimes more men. The business was established in 1854 and in his time Cruickshank built racing yachts and other small craft. His yacht Unique beat the favourite Xanthe at the Port Adelaide Regatta in 1864.

In addition to his yard Cruickshank had a slipway which could take a vessel of up to 400 tons. In 1883 the slip was used to assemble the iron steam ship Nelcebee. This had been imported in sections from T B Sleath & Co. in Scotland, and re-assembled at Cruickshank's.
