Captain CJ Clare resigns as Superintendent of the Lifeboat Service in South Australia. Due to the formation of the Commonwealth Navy he found he was no longer able to give the service the time and attention that it required. He recommended that the Marine Board should take over control of the lifeboat stations. This suggestion was followed through. This article reproduces Clare's letter to the Chief Secretary: in it he outlines the lifesaving equipment in place and deeply regrets the need to resign this duty. He recommends the Marine Board assume control and commends the service provided by the various police officers who have had charge of the life saving boats and rocket gear. The article concludes with a brief summary of the history of the lifeboat service: the first boats were the Rescue and shortly after the Percy. These have now been replaced with the City of Adelaide steam lifeboat donated by Robert Barr Smith and stationed at Beachport, and the Undaunted which was built at Largs Bay and stationed at Port MacDonnell and the Lady Daly at Victor Harbor. |
