Description :

Emu Bay Jetty, Kangaroo Island. Situated on the north coast of the island, Emu Bay is some 25 kilometres from the former main port of Kingscote. Kangaroo Island has always required more in the way of shipping facilities than elsewhere in the state. By its very nature as an island it has been dependent on shipping for the export of its grain harvests and other productions as well as the import of goods.

A jetty was opened at Emu Bay in 1918. At only 109 metres long, it was just sufficient for the ketches to tie up to load cargoes. There was a fresh water well adjacent to the beach for watering the horses which pulled the wagons down to the bay.

Coast Steamships Karatta also visted the bay with its jetty. Today the jetty is used by fishermen and the wide sand beach is popular with tourists. All import and export of goods to and from the island goes through the ferry at Penneshaw, or through the airport.
