The City of Adelaide, a new life-boat at Beachport which Searcy describes as being the gift of Robert Barr Smith, South Australian businessman and philanthropist. The steam life-boat, City of Adelaide was built in England and it was stationed at Beachport in the south east. The lifeboat was never called upon to effect a rescue, but her presence on the south east coast was insurance in the event of a wreck. Commander Walcot of the Protector had called for a steam life boat and Barr Smith had responded to the request with his gift. The City of Adelaide was subsequently fitted with a 40bhp petrol engine with a single screw propellor. It was also equipped with a dynamo run from the engine to provide electric lighting. Robert Barr Smith was a successful businessman and philanthropist. Among other things he funded the spires of St Peter's Cathedral, the Australian Inland Mission, money for the Art Gallery, Botanic Gardens the Sisters of St Joseph, an observatory as well as the steam lifeboat. |
