This article praises the current lifeboat service and the warning system of lighthouses and beacons, and calls for the lifeboat service to be extended to other ports along the coast. As at January 1872 boats were only stationed at Port Victor (Victor Harbor), Port MacDonnell and Robe and Port Adelaide. While praising the volunteers who man the boats in maritime emergencies the article calls for a better system as in some ports it is difficult to obtain crews at all times. The men can be away from port practising their trades. The writer suggests that businesses that derive their profits from the maritime trades should support the lifeboat system and encourage their employees to serve in the lifeboat service. Later a lifeboat was placed at Beachport. The Port Adelaide lifeboat was re-located at Semaphore. As surmised in the article rocket apparatus was also placed at the new Cape Jaffa lighthouse. |
