A rescue by the Port MacDonnell lifeboat provides the opportunity for an article praising the lifeboat service and its management by the Naval Commandant for South Australia. The Port MacDonnell crew's rescue effort is described and praised.

The writer states that he considers the management of the service by a board, as it had been previously managed was 'incapable of taking prompt action and issuing immediate commands' as was essential in an emergency. The Protector's officers and crew were working efficiently with the various lifeboat and rocket crews stationed along the coast and the result was evident.

The Navy and Protector had taken over control of the lifeboat service in late 1888 following the wreck of the Star of Greece at Port Willunga when 11 lives were lost. Regular inspections and training sessions were conducted with the volunteers and maintenance of the equipment undertaken.
