Description :

The lighthouse at Cape Northumberland, South Australia. In 1858 the first lighthouse on the southeastern coast of South Australia was built, and became operational on 1 January 1859 - this was the McDonnell light at Cape Northumberland.  This was the first light visible on the Australian coast for ships travelling through the Roaring 40s and was the last light in South Australia before moving into Victorian waters. The site selected was very exposed and too close to the cliff edge. As the cliff edge was eroded by the weather consideration was given to the construction of another lighthouse.

A replacement lighhouse was built and operating by 1882 400 metres east of the old light which was demolished. The light was regularly upgraded with changing technology from oil to kerosene to electricity. In late 1972 the light's electric operation was converted to tungsten halogen and in July 1977, the light was converted to automatic.

Finally in January 1990, the lighthouse was demanned, as was happening progressively around the Australian coast.
