HMCS Protector's Officers in 1897. Commander WR Creswell seated in the middle, seated left is Lieutenant HO Lundh. Protector's other officers at this time included Chief Engineer W Clarkson, possibly standing right; Paymaster John Norton and Lieutenant Patrick Weir. The South Australian government had commisioned the building of a naval vessel for the protection of its shores and the ships which traded with the colony. Protector arrived in September 1884. She was 188 feet long, beam 30 feet, powered with coal fired boilers and engines capable of developing 1,640 hp and displaced 920 tons. For her size she was a heavily armed ship, with one 8-inch, 12 ton breech loading gun, five 6-inch, four ton guns - two on each broadside and the other on the stern. There were also five, 10-barrel Gatling guns. The 8-inch gun had an extreme range of 7,500 yards with a shell of 180 pounds. Creswell became Acting Commanding Officer of Protector in 1891, and was confirmed Commander in 1893. In 1900 he joined the Queensland Naval Force, but resumed temporary command of Protector during its mission to the Boxer Uprising in China.Protector was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1910, saw service during World War I, and was paid off in 1924. |
