Description :

The steel barque Margit 1,241 tons, was stranded on the Coorong coast 10 November 1911 after sailing from Victor Harbor with a cargo of 23,385 bags of wheat. After loading at Victor Harbor the captain went ashore to arrange for a pilot: he never returned to his ship and his boat was found overturned on the beach. A boating mishap was believed to have occurred.

Eventually a substitute captain was secured as the chief officer was not qualified to take command. Finally on 10 November Margit sailed.

Shortly after leaving Victor Harbor Margit was driven ashore in heavy seas on the Coorong coast about 34 miles north of Kingston. The crew managed to get a line ashore using rocket equipment and landed using a breeches buoy. The Margit settled heavily and took on water and was eventually abandoned to the underwriters and was sold for 211 pounds. During salvage operations two men were killed by the fumes of the rotting grain. Fittings were stripped from the vessel and no further attempts made at salvage.
