Description :

Steam ship built Kobe, Japan in 1919, Portland Maru had loaded wheat at Port Pirie in March 1935, when a list developed. Not considered serious, the vessel proceeded to Port Lincoln to load more wheat. While in port a four hour underwater survey of the ship's hull was made; no signs of anything amiss was detected. Sometime after departure from Port Lincoln, flooding was detected in number 1 and 2 holds. The captain decided to make for Port Adelaide for repairs. By the time she rounded Cape Borda Portland Maru was settling heavily by the head, the main decks were awash.

The tug Wato was sent from Adelaide to assist and MV Minnipa offered its services and Dumosa was standing by. By this time the ship was submerged to its well decks. The crew were transferred to the Wato. The weather was deteriorating and the bagged wheat in the holds was now swelling and placing a strain on the hull and hatch covers.

The wreck of the Portland Maru was finally abandoned. The crew was landed at Port Adelaide and an inquiry conducted. The findings of this were not made public. The wreck was pilfered with much of its small gear being removed by fishermen. The wreck was purchased for 50 pounds and gear salvaged by Stan Sheridan.
Portland Maru at 5,865 tons is the largest wreck on Kangaroo Island.
