Description :
Twenty year old James Smith Pearce of the Kapunda Football Club. His position is given as 3rd man forward right wing. The second son of Hon. James Pearce, he was born in 1859 at Gawler and died in 1929 at Kapunda. He was a correspondent for the Register newspaper.

On Wednesday 18 April 1866 a public meeting was held in the North Kapunda Hotel for the purpose of forming a football club. It was unanimously resolved that a club be formed and called 'The Kapunda Football Club'. (Kapunda Football Club website)

Originally bedecked in blue and white the Kapunda Football Club later adopted red and black as club colours.

An early, and amusing, description of a typical Australian footballer was given in the Register on 20 June 1882, page 5b:

[He] never wears more than one ear, and about the same number of eyes; his nose looks like a bit of liver stretched across a thimble; one arm is bent backwards at the elbow; he appears to have two left legs and he carries as much scalp to the square inch as a catfish does... It is mostly played by married men, people who live next door to cornet players, and all other persons who are tired of their own existence.
